Gild Collective Founder Spotlight: Kelsey


Hi, Kelsey here! As you can see 👆I’m the Chief Experience Officer at GILD Collective. Basically what that means is that I will be considering the experience that you – whether you are an instructor, hostesses, or party-goer – have with our company. I want to make sure that each step of the way you are excited to create and that each time you finish a project you have a bit more confidence in what you’ve made. So, if you’re ever disappointed, I’m the one to reach out to.

Let’s get to know each other a bit, shall we?

I think the best way to paint a picture of who I am is through a series of juxtapositions that are part of my life…

  • Favorite Movies: Fight Club & Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
  • Favorite Musical Artists: Third Eye Blind & Taylor Swift
  • Favorite TV Shows: The WIRE & Pretty Little Liars
  • Athletic History: High School Bowler turned Triathlete

Looking at these things that may not naturally go together, it’s easier to understand how I became a creative who deals primarily in black and white boxes. With a background in User Experience Design, I spend most of my time creating wireframes for websites – you can think of them as the “blueprint” for a website. I lay out where everything should go, and how it should function. Then someone else comes in and adds their color to it.

Going through school, I thought being creative meant that I would work at an advertising agency, creating ads that people tore out and hung on their walls. I thought it meant being edgy and living in New York City. I tried photography and graphic design, but my heart wasn’t in it.

And that’s because my heart was with the user.

My friends often joke about how easy it is to bring tears to my eyes – watching an athlete I don’t care about score his first touchdown, seeing a couple reunite in the airport baggage claim, hearing about a friend’s smallest success or biggest hurdle. On a small scale, I feel what they are feeling. I can put myself in their shoes, even if our lives are completely different. And that empathy is what makes me successful as a user experience designer. It’s also what makes me creative, just a bit outside the definitions I previously established. Whether I am just like you or completely different, I want to hear your story and understand your challenges so that I can create an experience that suits you personally.

The great thing about GILD is that I already have an understanding of what it feels like to pin something I know I’m never going to make. It happened to me 10 minutes ago. I know what it feels like to be overwhelmed when you walk into a craft store. It happened to me on Thursday. I understand the feeling of disappointment when you attempt something and it doesn’t turn out the way you expected. It happened to me last month. If I can erase any of those occurrences for you, that would be pretty great – and I’ve already made it my mission to do so with GILD Collective.

Today a mentor for our startup said, “the only thing I’m guilty of is loving what I do, because I get to make the world a bit better every day.” I feel like by taking this chance on GILD, I’m one step closer to being guilty of the same thing. One more juxtaposition to add to my list: Cubicle worker turned entrepreneur.


Oh, also, my birthday is the 4th of July, and I like to do birthday dances!
